As you can't visit Vietnam without a trip in Halong Bay, I did book a 2 days-1 night trip from Hanoi towards the 8th Wonder of the World. Having met my friend Christine again in Hanoi, we decided to go together.
I'll add some pictures soon, but here is a short commentary in the meantime.
The isles genuinely deserve their reputation: the scenery is just fantastic!
Apart from that, I now hate the organized tourist trips more than ever... On the way to the Bay and back, they had us stop at these tourist-oriented shops and restaurants where you are sure not to see anything authentic about Vietnam. Also, they did some overbooking on the boat we were sailing, and 3 persons ended up sleeping on the roof since they had no bed. Of course, any discount or partial refund is out of question in this kind of situation.
The program was nice though, even if almost 15 hours total were spent on transport and transit over 2 days. Once on the boat, we set sail towards the visit of a big cave on one of the islands, which was discovered by the French in 1901 only. After that, we stopped in a quiet area for some swimming and kayaking before anchoring near Cat Ba Island to stay overnight. The night was quite lovely apart from the noise of the power engines coming from the neighbouring boats!
The next day was rather gloomy considering the heavy rain falling on the way back...
